In summer, temperatures average about 20° C+ (68° F) while in winter –20° C (-4° F) (and below, particularly when you factor in the windchill) isn’t anything out of the ordinary. With this 40° C+ temperature swing, Winnipeg’s weather varies annually more than almost every major city in the world.
We’ve earned the nickname “Winterpeg” honestly, but locals don't hibernate in winter and make the most out of each season with outdoor festivals, events and plenty of recreational activities. In particular, our two main rivers are used year-round, as skating and recreational surfaces in the winter when they freeze and are groomed, and in summer they are used for boat tours, kayaking and canoeing. Autumn is short and robust, with an explosion of colour throughout October that coincides with the end of harvest season. Spring begins in earnest in April, with our tree canopy unfurling in early May to provide shade and striking greenery via one of North America’s largest collection of elm trees.
